Postage Stamp Picture Frame

©Marc Bird 2010

Just recently I have begun designing a few products in order to make best use of any spare time and the facilities I have available at work. I work for a laser cutting and sheet metal work company in Washington, and although not my “true vocation”, I am very grateful to have a JOB at this present time what with the state our country is in and it can also come in very handy (and cheap if your familiar with the term guvy job!), as you can see here…

I have used Auto Cad to design the frame, which is made to look like a postage stamp and is the perfect size to fit a photograph the size of a Polaroid. These drawings are then directly imported into another system that programs a CNC laser. The individual parts are made from 1.5mm thick stainless steel and then powder coated red to give a  smooth, bright professional looking finish.

The Winter of 2009/10

On the train to London in the snow

Gambling terms of a “White Christmas…”

This winter has seen the coldest Christmas period for 25 years and the most snow that I can remember in my 22 year old life. It began at tea time on 17th December, the night before me and Lucy were about to get the train to London for the weekend and has not stopped since. It was officially a white Christmas according to the met office, who are paid by bookmakers to act as the race steward of the stakes for the annual white Christmas bet:

It provides a list of the places where a white Chistmas is measured, not as you would think in a list of weatherstations, but of locations that will create public interest, for example: Glasgow Cathedral, Manchester Granada Studios, Buckingham Palace and Birmingham Bullring as well as less glamerous locations such as Aberdeen FC’s football ground and Belfast’s Aldergrove Airport.

The Macmillan English Dictionary describes a white Christmas as ‘a Christmas day when there is snow on the ground’…. far too 0 and 1 in my opinion…
